SOME HINTS FOR VISITORS to Linköping University. Summary of travel options: http://www.liu.se/en/presentation/findus.html CURRENCY: The current exchange rate is 1U $ Å 7.50 SEK. AIR TRAVEL: BUDGET FLIGHTS WITHIN EUROPE There are budget flight from England, Scotland, Belgium, Italy, France, Germany by Ryanair http://www.ryanair.ie/index.htm to 'Stockholm Skavsta' http://www.skavsta-air.se/eng/fakta.htm. This airport is just outside Nyköping which is halfway between Stockholm and Linköping. (100km from Linköping). Airport buses http://www.flygbussarna.com/flygbussarna/ run from Skavsta to Linköping, taking about 1.5 hours and link up with most Ryanair flights. These flights can be very inexpensive, especially when booked on net well in advance. There are a number of other budget airlines to Skavsta and Arlanda Airport, Stockholm from other European countries. AIR TRAVEL: SCHEDULED AIRLINES. From outside Sweden the most convenient way to get to Linköping is to fly on a SAS through ticket via Copenhagen to Linköping or to nearby Norröping (40 minutes by road from Linköping). http://www.scandinavian.net/ (Flights by airlines other than SAS or its partners e.g. Lufthansa, British Midlands are usually dearer.) A taxi from Norrköping airport to Linköping can be booked with air ticket, and is much cheaper than hiring a taxi on arrival at Norrköping airport. Alternatively, you can fly into Arlanda Airport, Stockholm. It is possible to fly to Linköping or nearby Norrköping from Stockholm, but these are business flights and very expensive; occasionally SAS will issue a through ticket via Stockholm, but usually these tickets have to be bought separately. Most convenient and cheapest way to get to Linköping from Arlanda airport is by direct train http://www.resplus.se/?entry=direct&tab=2&language=2 http://www.sj.se/node/0,4452,3367_1,FF.html but these are not very frequent. Usually it is necessary to go to Stockholm Central Station by (expensive) high speed train http://www3.techsell.se/atrain/smpage.fwx?page=39 or by airport bus http://www.flygbussarna.com/flygbussarna/en/index.html From Stockholm Central Station to Linköping there are trains http://www.resplus.se/?entry=direct&tab=2&language=2 http://www.sj.se/node/0,4452,3367_1,FF.html or buses http://www.swebus.se/ Note that train tickets bought on day of departure are very expensive, but if bought a month or even a week before travel can be as low as only 20% of the 'ordinary 2nd class' fare. Tickets should be bought before boarding trains and have automatic seat reservations. Buses do not need to be booked in advance, and tickets are bought on boarding; prices approximate to the very lowest train tickets. Train travel is faster, a bit more frequent and more comfortable than bus. Between Stockholm and Linköping (200km) the travel time is just around 1:42 with fast train (called X2000) and 2:13 to 2:32 for (cheaper) ordinary trains; buses take about 3 hours.
