Codes on Euclidean spheres
Codes on 3-dimensional Euclidean spheres have been studied since
antiquity. The five Platonic solids were described already by Euclid. The so
called kissing number problem was the subject of a famous discussion between
Newton and Gregory as early as 1694. In recent times codes on spheres in
higher dimensions have been intensively studied in connection with systems for
efficient transmission of information over noisy channels. We offer a
brief introduction to the topic, describe the connection to telecommunication
engineering, and give a brief overview of the recent development.
